What In The World Is Functional Keratin In Skin Care?
Once you start researching skin care it won’t be long before you start to learn about keratin. What is keratin?
Keratin is found right throughout our bodies. It is a protein that is extremely strong and it can be found in the hard areas of our bodies like our nails and also in the softer areas of our bodies, like skin. A lot of keratin is found in our nails, teeth, hair and skin.
Keratin is formed by cells called keratinocytes and is found mainly in the epidermis of our skin, and they will slowly make their way to the surface of the skin where they form a protective layer of dead skin cells which are slowly lost over time.
There are some important roles that keratin performs in our skin, including providing some skin waterproofing. But in particular it provides skin elasticity and skin strength.
Both these are important for optimal skin health, and as our skin ages it starts to lose some of its ability to maintain its strength and elasticity and this is due in part to a reduction in keratin.
So you would be accurate in assuming that if you use skin care products with keratin in them you are restoring your stores of skin keratin and thereby improving your skin strength and elasticity right? Wrong.
The reason is that the process used to produce the keratin found in mainstream skin care products is a process using heat and acid, and this “denaturalizes” the keratin into a form that is of no use to the skin.
So if that’s keratin what does functional keratin mean? Functional keratin is keratin that is not changed or denaturalized by the process of extracting it, and is still of use to the skin. It is produced without heat or acid from the wool of sheep.
It is only recently that this process has been perfected by one small company that makes it and has patented it. It is put into a product called Cynergy TK that is used only in the worlds very best skincare products.
Studies on the effectiveness of products containing Cynergy TK have shown visible improvements in fine lines and wrinkles on the skin and an improvement in skin complexion.
Cynergy TK is expensive, and so the big brand name skin care products don’t use it. Because the big brands spend their budget on advertising, whereas the small niche company spends it’s budget on product quality.
